Entrare in quello stadio e sentire tutto il pubblico che canta You’ll never walk alone. L’emozione ti prende e ricordi come quella canzone venne incisa dagli imberbi Gerry & The Pacemakers nell’Ottobre del 1963, portando la band al primo posto in hit parade. Il fenomeno Beatles già era nell’aria, ma la band di Gerry se la giocava anche con altri della british invasion, come The Zombies, The Searchers, The Kinks, The Kingsmen, The Yardbirds. Da un punto di vista storico Gerry and the Pacemakers riuscirono a raggiungere il primo posto in classifica in Gran Bretagna con i primi tre singoli consecutivi pubblicati (ossia How Do You Do It?, I Like It ed appunto You’ll Never Walk Alone. Il primato fu eguagliato solo diversi anni dopo dai Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Gerard (detto Gerry) Marsden era nato a Liverpool, il 24 Settembre 1942 ed è morto nella sua città ieri 3 Gennaio 2021. Nella band c’era anche suo fratello Frederick John, scomparso nel 2006.
Il legame con i Beatles era molto forte, visto che con loro condividevano l’impresario Brian Epstein e il produttore George Martin.
